    Commissioning of the I-LHC RF low level with beam

    During the machine development session of 2007-10-03, the energy matching between PS and SPS was completed for the 208Pb82+ beam. The I-LHC RF low level, including the phase loop and the synchronisation loop, was commissioned to capture a single bunch of 208Pb82+. After commissioning, the beam was used for several non RF related machine developments

    VLBI Observations of a Complete Sample of Radio Galaxies V. 3C346 and 4C31.04: two Unusual CSS Sources

    We present observations at 1.7 and 8.4 GHz of two Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) sources from a complete sample of low-intermediate power radio galaxies. 3C346 shows an asymmetric structure with a one-sided ``jet'' and ``hot spot''. Present observations suggest that the classification of this source as a CSS is inappropriate, and that it is a common radio galaxy at a small angle to the line of sight. Its properties are in agreement with the predictions of unified schemes models. 4C31.04 shows more complex structure with the possibility of a centrally located flat spectrum core in between two close lobes.     Collaboration in a multi-user game: impacts of an awareness tool on mutual modeling

    This paper presents an experimental research that focuses on collaboration in a multi-player game. The aim of the project is to study the cognitive impacts of awareness tools, i.e., artifacts that allow users of a collaborative system to be aware of what is going on in the joint virtual environment. The focus is on finding an effect on performance as well as on the representation an individual builds of what his partner knows, plans and intends to do (i.e., mutual modeling). We find that using awareness tools has a significant effect by improving task performance. However, the players who were provided with this tool did not show any improvement of their mutual modeling. Further analysis on contrasted groups revealed that there was an effect of the awareness tool on mutual modeling for players who spent a large amount of time using the too

    Non integer harmonic number acceleration of lead ions in the CERN SPS

    The project to accelerate lead ions in the CERN complex has been successfully completed and physics has begun. In the SPS, the final machine in the chain, the ions are accelerated from an energy of 5.1 GeV/nucleon to 160 GeV/nucleon using the existing 200 MHz travelling-wave cavities. The change in revolution frequency during acceleration is much larger than can be accepted by the untuned cavities when operated at constant harmonic number. A technique has been developed to overcome this limitation which takes advantage of the filling time of this type of cavity which is shorter than one turn. Fast amplitude and frequency modulation of the RF waveform allows the cavities to operate at a constant, optimum frequency during the passage of a batch of particles in the structure. This frequency is not a multiple of the revolution frequency and therefore during the gaps between batches the phase of the composite RF waveform is changed to maintain synchronism from turn to turn as the beam accelerates.     Study of the variability of Blazars gamma-ray emission

    The gamma-ray emission of blazar jets shows a pronounced variability and this feature provides limits to the size and to the speed of the emitting region. We study the gamma-ray variability of bright blazars using data from the first 18 months of activity of the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. From the daily light-curves of the blazars characterized by a remarkable activity, we firstly determine the minimum variability time-scale, giving an upper limit for the size of the emitting region of the sources, assumed to be spheroidal blobs in relativistic motion. These regions must be smaller than ~10^-3 parsec. Another interesting time-scale is the duration of the outbursts. We conclude that they cannot correspond to radiation produced by a single blob moving relativistically along the jet, but they are either the signature of emission from a standing shock extracting energy from a modulated jet, or the superposition of a number of flares occurring on a shorter time-scale. We also derive lower limits on the bulk Lorentz factor needed to make the emitting region transparent for gamma-rays interacting through photon-photon collisions.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on Advances in Space Research.     Loss of Landau Damping in the LHC

    Loss of Landau damping leading to a single bunch longitudinal instability has been observed in the LHC during the ramp and on the 3.5 TeV flat top for small injected longitudinal emittances. The first measurements are in reasonable agreement with the threshold calculated for the expected longitudinal reactive impedance budget of the LHC as well as with the threshold dependence on beam energy. The cure is a controlled longitudinal emittance blow-up during the ramp which for a constant threshold through the cycle should provide an emittance proportional to the square root of energy

    VLBI Observations of a Complete Sample of Radio Galaxies. VI. The Two FR-I Radio Galaxies B2 0836+29 and 3C465

    We present 5 GHz global VLBI observations of the two Fanaroff Riley Type I radio galaxies B2 0836+29 and 3C465 (2335+26). For 3C465 we present also 1.7 GHz and 8.4 GHz global VLBI data. In addition VLA observations were used to obtain arsecond resolution continuum and polarization maps at 5 GHz. Both sources are very asymmetric on the parsec-scale, with a core and a one-sided jet, aligned with the main arcsecond scale jet. We place a limit on the milliarcsecond jet to counterjet brightness ratio Bjet_{jet}/Bcjet_{cjet} \gtsim 20 and \gtsim 30 for B2 0836+29 and 3C465 respectively. For 3C465 the strong asymmetry holds to the kiloparsec scale. The brightness asymmetry and the ratio between the core radio power and total radio power allow us to constrain the jet velocity close to the core and the orientation of the radio structure with respect to the line of sight. The results suggest that the plasma speed is relativistic on the parsec scale for both sources, i.e. vjet_{jet} \gtsim 0.75c for B2 0836+29 and vjet_{jet} \gtsim 0.6c for 3C465. While vjet_{jet} decreases from the parsec to the kiloparsec scale in B2 0836+29, in 3C465 the very high vjet_{jet} holds all the way to the kiloparsec-scale {\t bright spot}. Our results are in agreement with the unification scheme suggestion that FR-I radio galaxies are the unbeamed poulation of BL-Lac objects. Furthermore, they reinforce the idea that the central engine in FR-I and FR-II radio galaxies must be qualitatively similar. The different radio morphology could then be due either to an intrinsically different nuclear power, which affects the torus geometry or to different conditions in the region beyond the parsec scale, where a significant deceleration in the FR-I jets occurs.Comment: 28 pages, 4 tables, 8 figures all available under request from [email protected]

    Impact of inactivated poliovirus vaccine on mucosal immunity: implications for the polio eradication endgame.

    The polio eradication endgame aims to bring transmission of all polioviruses to a halt. To achieve this aim, it is essential to block viral replication in individuals via induction of a robust mucosal immune response. Although it has long been recognized that inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) is incapable of inducing a strong mucosal response on its own, it has recently become clear that IPV may boost immunity in the intestinal mucosa among individuals previously immunized with oral poliovirus vaccine. Indeed, mucosal protection appears to be stronger following a booster dose of IPV than oral poliovirus vaccine, especially in older children. Here, we review the available evidence regarding the impact of IPV on mucosal immunity, and consider the implications of this evidence for the polio eradication endgame. We conclude that the implementation of IPV in both routine and supplementary immunization activities has the potential to play a key role in halting poliovirus transmission, and thereby hasten the eradication of polio
